BOOKS BUILDING GENERATIONS
The Books Bridging Generations program pairs students grades K-3 in all three Wallowa County school districts with community volunteers for weekly reading sessions. With the goal of building positive adult/child relationships while simultaneously developing reading skills and initiating a life-long love for reading, the program is loosely modeled on a number of evidence-based reading models.
BOYS COUNCIL + GIRLS CIRCLE
Boys Council is a strengths-based group approach for boys and youth who identify with male development to promote their safe and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years. It aims to promote boys’ natural strengths, and to increase their options about being male in today’s world.
The Girls Circle model, a structured support group for girls and youth who identify with female development, integrates relational theory, resiliency practices, and skills training in a specific format designed to increase positive connection, personal and collective strengths, and competence in girls.
GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run is a program that works to encourage girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles through interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a celebratory 5k run. The curriculum seeks to address all aspects of the girls’ development to enhance their physical, emotional, mental, and social well being while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Building Healthy Families typically facilitates two sessions per school year for girls in 3rd – 8th grade.
SAFE SITTER + SAFE AT HOME CLASSES
Building Healthy Families has several trained Safe Sitter® staff and offers this important class multiple times per year. Safe Sitter’s goal is to provide life skills, safety skills, and child care training to all youth in order to build safer communities. This course applies whether youth are learning to be safe while home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting.
Course content includes safety skills, child care skills, first aid and rescue skills, and life and business skills.

EXPLORATION AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
The Exploration K-4th Program is housed at the Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph School Districts. Curriculum is provided by Building Healthy Families, Wallowa County Prevention Collaborative, Josephy Center and other community partners. BHF coordinates the program and views out-of-school-time programming as an important and growing piece of the value they can offer to children of all backgrounds in Wallowa County. Exploration is assessed as a high priority to continue and expand in part because of the collaboration it encourages and also its potential for universal use and acceptance.
WALLOWA COUNTY PREVENTION
The Wallowa County Prevention Program Collaborative (WCPPC) is a community partnership (BHF, Wallowa Valley Center for Wellness, Wallowa County Youth Services, Safe Harbors, Wallowa County Health Department and Department of Human Services) formed as the collaborative body and advisory committee to plan for and implement Prevention Services and Problem Gambling support. Building Healthy Families convenes and facilitates the collaborative partners and provides project monitoring, reporting and fiscal oversight. Some of our projects include:

COMMUNITY EVENTS
BHF is proud to collaborate with community partners in offering a number of Community Events throughout the year. The Kidfest celebration, held in September, has been going for more than ten years. We partner with school districts to bring in exciting and educational speakers and entertainers like magicians and unicycle performers. We hold workshops on helmet and bicycle safety, host seasonal events like our popular Gingerbread Mania, have tons of fun at family Bingo nights, and so much more. See the Events Calendar on this page or visit us on Facebook to see our current and upcoming offerings.
Alternative Education
Alternative Education provides a unique learning opportunity for students from Wallowa County seeking an alternative to a traditional comprehensive high school. The innovative half-day program provides a hands-on, project-based curriculum that aligns with both Oregon State and National academic standards. Students have the opportunity to work in both a structured classroom setting and have the flexibility of recovering past credits via a packet based system in the afternoons. In addition, we are working towards each student receiving work experience via internships, and graduating with a solid post high school action plan.

BHF offers individualized GED tutoring and testing for those looking to complete their high school education.

Every day in America, millions of parents and caregivers travel to work, school, and other activities with their children. While many of those children are riding in correctly installed car seats for their ages and sizes, nearly half are not. There’s a reason all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories require the use of car seats for children traveling in motor vehicles: car seats, booster seats, and seat belts reduce crash fatalities among children. Car seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71% for infants (under 1 year old) and by 54% for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars. Ensuring that children are correctly buckled in the right seat for their ages and sizes can mean the difference between life and death.
Taking time to check children’s car seats is a critical step toward safety. Every day in 2022, an average of three children 14 and under were killed, and an estimated 429 were injured in traffic crashes. Of the children who died while riding in passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans), more than a third were unbuckled. Give your child passengers the best protection: double-check to make sure they’re correctly buckled and in the right seat.
To emphasize the importance of child passenger safety to parents and caregivers, Building Healthy Families is participating in Child Passenger Safety Week. Just like drivers check their vehicle’s oil and tires, everyone who drives children needs to check their car seats to make sure they’re appropriate for your child’s age and size. Sometimes as parents, we don’t know what we don’t know. Even for experienced parents who think their children are all set, Child Passenger Safety Week is a great time to double-check.
Call 541-426-9411 to learn more about how BHF can assist your family in obtaining a car seat, as well as how our certified technicians can educate you about child passenger safety and the safe installation of car seats!
