BOOKS BUILDING GENERATIONS

The Books Bridging Generations program pairs students grades K-3 in all three Wallowa County school districts with community volunteers for weekly reading sessions.  With the goal of building positive adult/child relationships while simultaneously developing reading skills and initiating a life-long love for reading, the program is loosely modeled on a number of evidence-based reading models.

BOYS COUNCIL + GIRLS CIRCLE

Boys Council is a strengths-based group approach for boys and youth who identify with male development to promote their safe and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years. It aims to promote boys’ natural strengths, and to increase their options about being male in today’s world.

The Girls Circle model, a structured support group for girls and youth who identify with female development, integrates relational theory, resiliency practices, and skills training in a specific format designed to increase positive connection, personal and collective strengths, and competence in girls.

GIRLS ON THE RUN

Girls on the Run is a program that works to encourage girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles through interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a celebratory 5k run. The curriculum seeks to address all aspects of the girls’ development to enhance their physical, emotional, mental, and social well being while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Building Healthy Families typically facilitates two sessions per school year for girls in 3rd – 8th grade.

SAFE SITTER + SAFE AT HOME CLASSES

Building Healthy Families has several trained Safe Sitter® staff and offers this important class multiple times per year. Safe Sitter’s goal is to provide life skills, safety skills, and child care training to all youth in order to build safer communities. This course applies whether youth are learning to be safe while home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting.

Course content includes safety skills, child care skills, first aid and rescue skills, and life and business skills.

BHF coordinates the program and views out-of-school-time programming as an important and growing piece of the value they can offer to children of all backgrounds in Wallowa County.  Exploration is assessed as a high priority to continue and expand in part because of the collaboration it encourages and also its potential for universal use and acceptance.

Alternative Education

Alternative Education provides a unique learning opportunity for students from Wallowa County seeking an alternative to a traditional comprehensive high school.  The innovative half-day program provides a hands-on, project-based curriculum that aligns with both Oregon State and National academic standards.  Students have the opportunity to work in both a structured classroom setting and have the flexibility of recovering past credits via a packet based system in the afternoons.  In addition, we are working towards each student receiving work experience via internships, and graduating with a solid post high school action plan.
